House System

All students are allocated to a college house when they enrol at St Mary’s Catholic College.

Houses are named after the first four Bishops of the Cairns Diocese: Bishop Thomas Vincent Cahill, Bishop James Murray, Bishop John Hutchinson and Bishop John Heavey.

Each house participates in various activities during the year, for which points are earned towards the College Participation Cup. Activities include:

  • Community Days
  • Organising and running house meetings
  • Carnivals (swimming, cross-country, athletics)
  • Debating

The principle purpose of the house system is to develop the Catholic ethos of the College and students’ appreciation of the concepts of service, care and concern, and community. A focus on encouraging participation across the school also assists to develop senior students’ leadership skills.
